5 Reasons Why You Should Block And Retrieve Your SIM Immediately After Losing It

Losing a phone with a SIM card should never be taken lightly if you have registered the SIM with your personal details. Many culprits who engage in phone theft find it more rewarding if they find a SIM registered by another user to perpetrate their criminal activities.

Imagine missing out on a follow up to the second phase for an interview simply because you lost a phone.  At all cost, it is always advisable to block and retrieve your SIM within 2hrs after losing it. Delay in doing this could be very dangerous and regrettable. Below are top reasons why you should block your SIM immediately after losing it.

  •        Your Identity May Be Used For Crime

The world is getting more dangerous and the number of people looking to take advantage of other people in order to survive is on the increase. Criminals will often use your stolen sim to engage in activities like calling victims for ransom after a successful kidnap, send threats or warnings to targets.  They may even use it to communicate during a robbery operation, and lots more.

Not blocking your sim early enough might make you a victim of circumstance in this regard.

2.       False ‘Save Our Soul’ Messages May Be Sent To Your Contact

Out of concern, many friends and families are prone to acting to our distress call through text messages.  These criminals are well gifted in ways they form their text messages that picking up the phone to call back will be the least on targeted victim’s mind. Many a times, the victim is most likely going to act accordingly and immediately in line with the text messages. By the time the targeted victim realizes the false call to action, hard earned cash would have been parted with.

The culprits might even go to the extreme by sending SOS on behalf of other contacts on your SIM after going through your text messages and fully aware of the family chain as well as friends’ chain. In order to save yourself or loved ones from these mishaps, ensure to block your sim immediately once you are sure that your sim or phone has been stolen or misplaced.

3.       No Privacy For Your Banking and Investment Transactions

I know of a lady who misplaced her phone. Instead of retrieving or blocking the old line, she just went to buy a new SIM (with new number). Unfortunately, a guy found the phone but never had any contact to connect with the lady. Instead of the guy to take the phone to the police, he decided to keep using the phone. From 2011 up to the moment of writing this article, alerts of all the financial transactions that the lady has been making on her GTB and FCMB accounts go to the guy’s phone. The lady lives her normal credit and debit  activities not knowing someone sees it elsewhere and this might continue for a very long time.

The victim might even be more unfortunate if this happens to fall in the hands of more vulnerable culprits who are simply looking out to wreak havoc.

4.       Your Spouse Is Often The First Target

When you lose your phone to someone with an ulterior motive, the first contact he looks for on your SIM/Phone is people who are very close to you in order to launch attack. Once he identifies a spouse, husband, wife, honey, sugar pie, etc , saved on your phone, he either sends out a perfect message or gives a distress call in order to aggravate fears as this prompts the victim into making immediate action.

A good way to prevent this from happening to you is to avoid saving your spouse’s contact with a conspicuous name on your phone/sim.

5.       Vital Communication May Be Lost

Follow ups to some of your business meetings, job interviews, previous conversation or registrations may be sent to your number. You will lose out on vital information that may help you in life if you have failed to block and retrieve your line immediately. Imagine missing a message for a second phase of interview simply because you have failed to block and retrieve a previous line.
