How To Give Birth In Canada Legally

Making a decision to give birth abroad is actually what many families have been ruminating on for years but considering the cost of traveling from Africa to overseas for child birth and the rising currency exchange rate to the currency of foreign countries-one may quickly understand why this may be unpopular in Africa to a large extent.

Without kidding you, the benefits of giving birth abroad are endless. The fact that your child will have a dual citizenship and qualify for free medical and education contribution in other countries is enough to put the heart at ease. When it comes to Canada, you can be rest assured you will have access to a standard medical care.

‘The best gift you can give your newborn is a Canadian passport’

You should also know that giving birth in Canada only qualifies your newborn as a Canadian citizen but not the parents unlike giving birth in Brazil which qualify both the child and the parents as citizens. The child may however exercise his/her right when he/she is 18 in order to include the parents in the citizenship status. Canada has also recently discontinued access to free medical and free education to children who are born in Canada but their parents are currently not working or living in Canada. Through Canadian tax payments, benefits like free medical and education are possible for citizens. So if parents from Africa give birth in Canada and take their children out of Canada after birth, they are not in any way contributing tax in Canada hence not entitled to the sweat of other tax payers who are living and working in Canada. Even if you have a permanent residence status in Canada, the immigration law requires that you stay at least 6 months in a year in order to qualify for medical and educational benefits in Canada.

Giving birth in Canada will save money a long way compared to giving birth in the United States. In fact, a recent survey has it that United States is one of the most expensive places to give birth in the world and your child will not even readily qualify for some benefits such as education and medical. Since Africa failed to hit her target by MDG to eradicate maternity death amongst women by 2015. The need to give birth abroad never seizes to be on the increase amongst women in Africa. Up to the moment of writing this article, all persons born in Canada automatically become citizens of Canada irrespective of the visa or entry status of their parents.

Making a decision to give birth in Canada is not a violation to any of the Canadian laws so you will never be denied visa or entry to Canada based on the fact that your sole purpose for visiting Canada is to give birth.

The Things strongly required by the government of Canada in order to be considered visa for child birth in Canada are;

  • ·     Do you have enough funds to cover your expenses during the maternity period?
  •       Are you in right medical condition and admissible?
  •       Will you return after your child birth?

You will have to strongly satisfy these questions and will be required to back your answers with necessary documents as required.

Here are steps you need to take in order to give birth in Canada

Tip 1: Apply to Visit Canada Early Enough

You may have to initially apply for 2 weeks visit and you will have later claim that you changed your mind while in Canada to elongate your stay to about 3 months. Make sure you include all necessary documents in your application. Canadian immigration will most likely give you a 6 months visa but suspicious, you may be given the 2 weeks you requested. You will be referred to as TRV. APPLY EARLY ENOUGH. Visit here for more information.

Tip 2: Start Looking For A Doctor Based In Canada

Having a doctor’s invitation to give birth in Canada will definitely speed up your application and will increase your chances of getting a visa otherwise proceed to step 3.

Tip 3: Claim You Are Going To Visit

If your pregnancy is probably more than 6 months and perhaps obvious, you may still be able to apply for visiting and extend your stay once you get to Canada. You will have to maintain that you are going on a short stay when leaving for Canada though. Claiming that you are simply going on a visit will definitely increase your chances of being given a visa.

Tip 4: Conduct Your Medical Exam

Do not wait until the embassy asks for your medical result before applying for it. You will need to have done a medical exam prior to your visa application in a reputable hospital preferably one of the approved hospitals by Canadian embassy.

Tip 5: Prepare to Defend Your Documents

You will need to have a good bank statement that will show your ability to cover your stay and of course a sound medical result that shows you are admissible in case of any medical condition. Many have had their Canadian visit visa approved without interviews but if you are called for an interview, simply say what you have in your documents and be natural as water.

Tip 6: What To Fill In You Application

If you got pregnant after your application or due to a reason, you did not state in your application that you are pregnant; simply tell them during interview that you got pregnant after the application and no need to twist words. If you are applying for the sole purpose of giving birth, simply state it at the application stage-filling the right forms and do state how any members of your family will accompany you when traveling.

Tip 7: Some Documents Will Be Missing When Your Application is Returned

After 4 weeks or more, when your visa application is being returned to you, if you have been given visa you will see your passport stamped and if otherwise, the reasons for refusing you visa will be stated in your application and you may be eligible for an appeal. You will not find you bank statement in your returned application in all cases as this is often subjected to a prolonged verification. Any other documents found fraudulent in your application will also be found missing.
