Meet The Man Who Made Sofia The First

Craig's Story

Craig Stuart Gerber (born January 8,
1959, in Chicago, Illinois) is a retired professional baseball player
who played 1 season for the California Angels
of Major League Baseball. He was a 20th round draft pick in the 1981 Major League Baseball draft. During his 65 games with the Angels, he played in the field at shortstop, second and third base. He hit two home runs in a total of 1,662 minor league at bats .His last game with Angels was on October 6, 1985.
How Did The Story Start?
After graduating from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis,CA, he joined the Angel Baseball team. Shortly after retiring from the game on October 6,1985, he was approached by Nancy Kanter at Disney Junior because they were looking to create a TV show centered around a princess for 2-7 year old children. She questioned him if he had any ideas but his response was that he would think about it. While driving home that very day and ruminating on the right response to give Nancy, the thought of his childhood days came to his mind.

He began to see a great opportunity to create a fairy tale story that the modern family can relate to, deepening his imagination, further to having a wonderful princess character that children could closely identify with since he just had his first child at that time. With all that in mind, he further thought “What if, there was an ordinary girl that lived in an enchanted village and her mother fell in love and married the king overnight, which made this young little girl a princess overnight." She has to learn how to be royal and get to know her step-family. The idea of this blended royal family in an enchanted world is the heart of the show.

Relating Reality With Fantasy
Craig is currently married with 2 kids. Miles, one of his kids, has been so immersed in the fantasy world by always making a reality of every character he comes across. We all are guilty of this at a point in our lives though. Kids could pick up a paper and make aero plane and fly it around in their hands with so much concentration as though they were flying a real plane. This has always reminded Craig the story of his own childhood days and he had to figure out a way he could create characters that could depict a bit of his childhood in this regard.
Sofia is an 8 year old village girl who became a princess after her mother married a king. She got a mystical power when she moved to the royal kingdom which has given her the power to speak to animals and also hear when animals speak back to her. There are different characters in this animated series which include; Queen Mirinda, King Roland II, Cedric, etc.

Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess premiered on Disney Channel on November 18, 2012, garnering 8.17 million viewers (when the Live+7 ratings were tabulated), which made it the #1 cable TV telecast of all time for Kids 2-5 and Girls 2-5. It also set a record for the #1 preschool cable TV telecast ever in Total Viewers and for Adults 18-49.
This immediately boosted the popularity of Craig in the animation world. Craig Gerber and his animated works have received several nominations and award from various bodies including the well-publicized Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song – Main Title and Promo for Sofia the and the Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Original Song – Main Title and Promo for Sofia First. Other animated TV series he has done include; Sofia the First, Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy.
Beyond United States, Sofia The First is also loved by many in the African continent and even in other parts of the world. This animated cartoon series appear to be witnessing a continued success even now.
